ATOM Documentary Finalists to be featured on Docoplanet

This year, we are pleased to advise that Docoplanet will be hosting short clips from each of the documentary category finalists in the 2008 EnhanceTV ATOM Awards.

The clips will be live by the end of September…so watch this space!

Created in co-operation with Film Victoria, Docoplanet is a free initiative which was created to bridge the gap between independent film makers and well resourced production houses.

As part of this initiative, Docoplanet aims to link with documentary film festivals, such as the 2008 EnhanceTV ATOM awards, to create an online festival hub that promotes documentaries festivals into a new online vision.

Whilst UGC domains such as YouTube currently exist, Docoplanet differs from this as it is a community created solely to enable documentary makers to have their work seen by broadcasters and other Docoplanet community members with shared documentary interests.

Broadcasters get involved by opting to receive a bi-monthly newsletter with the latest Docoplanet uploads which encourage them to check back to the website on a regular basis.NMG Logo

James Boldiston, Executive Producer and Director of NMG – the creator of Docoplanet said, "A passion is required to make a success from what is a non-revenue application. Docoplanet is not about making money, it’s about creating a community where documentary makers can share their work with the world in a central hub.”

Docoplanet is a growing community of documentary makers and broadcasters who all have a common goal… documentary!

Teaching with media in the digital age

Teachers are now using digital technology to store, access and play audiovisual material in the classroom – and with a Screenrights licence, there are no copyright hassles.

Nearly all schools, TAFEs and universities have a Screenrights licence that lets them copy from television and radio, store copies digitally and deliver them over a network. This means teachers can use systems such as Clickview for accessing audiovisual material, and online sharing of copied programs with other licensed schools.

The licence also lets teachers download podcasts and vodcasts of their favourite programs put online by the broadcaster.

Filmmakers are paid for this use of their work, with Screenrights collecting payment from the relevant peak authority and distributing this money to the filmmakers whose works are copied or made available online.

Screenrights also established EnhanceTV, proud sponors of the EnhanceTV ATOM Awards to make using television in teaching easier.

ATOM Finalists being seen and heard …

Thursday’s Fictions, the surreal dance fantasy film, was aired on ABC2 on Sunday 31 August. Created by Dr Richard James Allen and his partner at The Physical TV Company, Dr Karen Pearlman, ‘Thursday’s Fictions’ tells the story of awoman named ‘Thursday’ who finds out she is going to be reincarnated as ‘Tuesday’. Her attempt to cheat the cycle of reincarnation unleashes a terrible beauty that leaves the other ‘days of the week’ in turmoil.

One of the things that makes ‘Thursday’s Fictions’such a unique production is that it is based on an idea about reincarnation which has itself had a number of incarnations.

‘Thursday’s Fictions’ began as a large scale stage production with dancers and actors and elaborate sets and costumes, was then published as a book which was nominated for the Kenneth Slessor Prize for Poetry and from there evolved into the multi-award-winning film which is now in the running for a 2007 EnhanceTV ATOM Award.

Thursday’s Fictions won a 2007 EnhanceTV ATOM Award for Best Experimental Production and is a finalist this year in the Best Mulitmodal Production category.

Sarah Tracton’s production, ‘White Sound’, which is a finalist in the Best Documentary, Short Form category has been selected to screen Opening Night of The Other Film Festival.

Director Sarah Tracton will participate in a post-screening Q&A alongside Braindamadj’d's Paul Nadler, at 8pm on Friday 5th September at the Melbourne Museum’s Age Theatre.

Having screened at festivals including Byron Bay, St Kilda, ‘White Sound’ will also feature at the Darwin Museum of Contemporary Art's   'Monitor' program in 2009.
‘White Sound’ explores the notion of a soundless existence, as visualised through deaf and hearing impaired perspectives.

‘296 Smith Street, which is a finalist in the Best Tertiary Short Fiction recently won the Best Australian Short Film and Best Screenplay awards at the Melbourne Film Festival, with the two actors featured in the film being recognised with two special performance citations.

In his daily battle as a pawnbroker, Ahmed deals with the bad, the mad and the sad in order to make a meagre living for his migrant family. During his day, he finds comfort in carving stone ornaments, which reminds us that not everything can be valued. In a nutshell, 296 Smith Street is about ‘One man. One place. One Day’.

Creator and director John Evagora recently participated in a screening and Q&A audience session which was held as part of the festival’s travelling roadshow in Davenport, Tasmania on Friday 29 August.

‘Twilight’, a finalist in Best Short Fiction, was also nominated for International Film Festival of England which was held in July and will be screened at the 'British Film Festival Los Angeles' (BFFLA) early next year.

‘Twilight’ was shot over the course of one January weekend in Sydney and was filmed on a cutting edge RED digital cinema camera, one of the first cameras in the country with 4k resolution and 23.98 fps, enabling true film quality.

‘Twilight’ is set in the near future, when global warming has made Sydney a city that is habitable only by night. The film’s central character, a young man makes a rash decision in an attempt to create a better life.

The film's epic scale and cinematic quality is a testament to the strength and versatility of this new cutting edge technology in the hands of independent film makers.

If you’re ‘being seen and heard’, tell the Editor about it and we can share your news in the newsletter.

 Did you know?

  • David Prowse was the guy in the Darth Vader suit in Star Wars. While he spoke all of Vader's lines during filming, he didn't know that he was going to be dubbed over by James Earl Jones until he saw the screening of the movie.
  • Rocky Lane, a cowboy movie hero whose films included King of the Mounties, Red Gulch Renegades and Silver City Kid was the voice of Mr Ed. George Burns also supplied Mr Ed’s voice on at least one occasion.

  • While the actual source of the name ‘Oscar’ for the Academy Awards’ statuette remains under debate, it was Hollywood columnist Sidney Skolsky who first used the nickname - in print - in his column on the sixth Academy Awards in 1934. He was referring to Katharine Hepburn’s first win for Best Actress. It wasn’t until 1939 that the Academy first officially used the nickname.

  • The sound of E.T. walking was made by someone squishing their hands in jelly.
